Ice Pick Acne Scar Treatment
What Are Ice Pick Scars?
Ice pick scars are a type of common acne scarring that leaves narrow pits with defined borders on the skin’s surface. As the name suggests, the skin appears as though a tiny ice pick has punctured it.
Ice pick scars are characterised by tiny, pitted indentations that puncture the epidermal and dermal skin layers. Moreover, ice pick scars are V-shaped apertures, wider at the opening but narrowing a few millimetres beneath the skin. Patients may feel self-conscious about their appearance because these scars often form on conspicuous areas of the face, such as the forehead and cheeks.
What Causes Ice Pick Scars?
Acne breakouts damage the skin, and in response, it will attempt to repair the affected areas by producing collagen. Occasionally, the healing process may go awry and scars form as a result. The two main types of acne scars are atrophic (arising from a loss of skin tissue and collagen damage during healing) or hypertrophic (caused by excess tissue growth).
Ice pick scars are categorised as atrophic due to their tendency to form deep depressions on the skin, and are caused by the following factors:
Acute Acne
Bacteria are trapped within the pores or hair follicles in cases of cystic or nodular acne, and these infections cause damage to the surrounding skin.
Inflammation
Inflamed acne lesions can potentially spread the inflammation to deeper layers of the skin tissue, increasing the likelihood of scar formation.
Disruption of the Skin’s Natural Healing Process
Squeezing or picking at acne can exacerbate inflammation, expose affected skin to more bacteria, and increase the chances of infection and scarring.
Affected Collagen Production
During the healing process, the skin does not produce enough collagen, resulting in acne scars.
Genetics
Healing responses and collagen production levels differ between individuals. Some people are more likely than others to get ice pick scarring due to genetic predisposition.
Ice Pick Acne Scar Treatment
There are several minimally invasive and non-invasive approaches available to treat ice pick scars that may improve the skin’s appearance by enhancing its natural healing process. No single method is suitable for everyone, which is why individuals should consider the different options for acne scar removal in Singapore:
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, that fill in the ice pick indentations. The fillers are injected under the skin to fill in deep scars from below, and as a result, ice pick scars may appear less noticeable. The effects from this treatment usually last for a few months, depending on the type of filler used. Mild swelling and redness may occur at the injection site , and the effects of the fillers typically appear within a week or so, keeping downtime to a minimum.
Subcision
Subcision is a minimally-invasive procedure designed to treat atrophic scars, including ice pick scars. A specialised hypodermic needle is inserted beneath the scar to break up fibrotic strands that anchor the scar to the underlying skin layer. Cosmetic improvement of the scar happens when the fibrotic strands are released and the wound heals, stimulating collagen production. Subcision usually requires three to six sessions, typically spaced about four weeks apart between sessions.
Microneedling
Tiny needles puncture the skin on acne scars to stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture while reducing the appearance of scars. Mild to moderate scarring responds well to microneedling, although it may not be as effective for deeper ice pick scars.
TCA CROSS (Trichloroacetic Acid Chemical Reconstruction Of Skin Scar)
TCA CROSS involves applying trichloroacetic acid to ice pick scars to trigger a healing response, promoting the formation of collagen. New skin gradually grows in the treated areas, which may reduce the appearance and depth of ice pick scars.
Punch excision
Individual ice pick scars are excised, creating a small wound before it is closed up with fine sutures. The typical outcome of excision is a smooth and even skin texture and reduced scar visibility after healing.
Punch Grafting
A small tool will be used to remove a tiny section of skin from a donor site – most often from behind your ear – which is then transplanted onto the site of the original scarring. Punch grafting minimises the appearance of scars by treating specific ones and promoting the growth of new skin tissue.
Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is a non-invasive treatment that uses heat or high-energy light to break down damaged skin cells beneath the surface. The appearance of ice pick scars may be reduced, and the skin’s texture is evened out. Collagen formation is stimulated in the inner layers of skin and encourages the growth of new skin tissue. The focused nature of laser resurfacing allows small but specific areas of scarring to be targeted at a time.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels involve applying a controlled chemical solution to the skin. The process will exfoliate the skin, removing damaged outer layers and dead skin cells. This helps to unclog pores, enhance cell turnover and stimulate collagen production to reveal healthier, renewed skin.
Preventing Ice Pick Scars
Prevention of ice pick scars may not be completely possible but you can still reduce your chances of developing them. To help minimise ice pick scars, you may consider trying the following steps:
Take Action As Soon As Possible
Do not delay treatment when acne makes an early appearance. It is best to get acne treatment as soon as it appears to avoid severe inflammation and reduce the likelihood of scarring.
Consult Professional Help
Consult a qualified doctor for assessment and individualised dermatological treatment. These are tailored to your skin type and acne severity and are done under the guidance of a professional aesthetic physician.
Do Not Pick Or Squeeze Acne
No matter how tempted you are, resist the urge to touch or squeeze acne lesions. Picking or squeezing acne can make inflammation worse by disrupting the skin’s healing process, and it can increase the risk of infection by introducing bacteria into the acne site.
Maintain A Consistent Skincare Routine
To support healthy-looking skin and reduce acne outbreaks, use mild, non-comedogenic products that do not clog pores, along with active components like retinol to help encourage natural skin cell turnover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do ice pick scars go away on their own?
Ice pick scars may gradually fade and diminish over time, but they do not completely go away by themselves. We recommend you consult with our doctor and consider available treatment procedures.
How much does ice pick scar treatment cost in Singapore?
The cost of treatment depends on the extent of scarring and the type of treatment recommended by your doctor or medical aesthetician.
How many sessions do I need to treat ice pick scars?
The number of treatment sessions needed varies between individuals, depending on factors such as skin type and specific skincare issues. A detailed consultation session can be arranged to help you ascertain your skincare needs and plan a suitable treatment schedule tailored to your acne scar situation.
Customised treatment is important because scar formation and severity, skin condition, and healing ability are unique to each patient.
Are there any side effects from ice pick scar treatments?
After treatment, you may experience mild side effects such as temporary skin redness and soreness. Downtime and recovery periods vary, depending on your acne scar situation, so it is helpful to discuss and review aftercare steps with your doctor.
