Oily Skin Treatment

The sebaceous glands beneath the skin’s pores produce sebum, a type of natural oil. It helps to preserve our skin and is a vital component of keeping our skin healthy. Sebum also keeps our skin hydrated, protects our skin, prevents premature ageing, and gives our skin a healthy glow. Moreover, those with oily skin tend to have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles.

However, it is a challenge to strike a balance between maintaining the skin’s natural hydration and the production of excess oil from our skin. While sebum and oil are responsible for lubricating our hair and skin, an overabundance can lead to clogged pores, where excessive sebum and dead skin cells accumulate.

When sebum mixes with dead skin cells, it can get trapped in pores, increasing the likelihood of breakouts, especially in the T-zone, which comprises the forehead, nose, and chin. As a result, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) or acne form on the skin, culminating in bumpy and rough skin texture. These make you more prone to bacterial infection which can result in long-term redness, scars, and acne marks that stay on your face for a long time.

Oily skin can happen to people of all ages, and you will know that you have oily skin if you experience one or more of the following signs:

  • Shiny or greasy appearance
  • Skin on the face is slick to the touch
  • Large, visible pores
  • Makeup that wears off quickly
  • Skin is prone to frequent breakouts

What Causes Oily Skin?

There are various factors that can cause oily skin. For example, touching your face with your fingers can spread dirt, oil, and bacteria from your hands to your face. Although some people naturally produce more oil due to genetics, the excess production can also be due to hormonal fluctuations that occur during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Certain medical conditions or medications may also cause excess sebum.

Furthermore, environmental factors like humidity (like in sunny Singapore), heat, and pollution may result in causing oily skin. If your diet is rich in fat and refined carbohydrates, you may also be more prone to oily skin.

Other than that, stress may activate hormones that increase sebum production, or you may be using skincare products that are too harsh for your skin and strip it of natural oils. As a result, your skin overcompensates and produces sebum in excess.

Oily Skin Treatments

Aquapure Deep Cleansing Treatment for oily skin

Other than the feeling of discomfort that accompanies having oily skin, you will also be more prone to acne breakouts. Thus, effective treatment is important in preventing your condition from worsening.

Aquapure Deep Cleansing Treatment

Reaching down to your pores with gentle suction to extract unwanted sebaceous content in them, this regimen reduces excess oil on your skin. It also deeply cleanses, removes dead skin, and unblocks pores to reduce acne.

Chemical Peel

This specially formulated solution is designed to exfoliate the top layers of your skin, penetrating the skin’s lipid barrier and reducing oil secretion. Chemical peels that use salicylic or glycolic acid improve oiliness, unclog pores, and treat your acne. This treatment encourages cell turnover and when done regularly, reduces acne breakouts and oiliness and enhances skin texture, resulting in smoother and clearer skin.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL therapy is a non-invasive treatment that is carried out in pulsing light waves to boost skin texture. Executed in multiple wavelengths, this therapy can target sebaceous glands to decrease the production of sebum. By damaging blood vessels that equip sebaceous glands, IPL therapy helps to reduce the size of sebaceous glands and their functions, resulting in improved skin texture, reduced pore size, and diminished acne inflammation.

Radio Frequency (RF) Microneedling

This treatment uses an instrument with fine needles to create micro-injuries in your skin, which triggers the production of collagen to enhance skin texture, lessen oiliness, decrease sebum production, refine pores, and improve acne scars.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

PDT incorporates light therapy with a photosensitising agent like topical medication to target your oil glands and acne-causing bacteria. This treatment helps to lessen oil production, reduce acne lesions, and improve the overall tone and texture of your skin.

Microdermabrasion

Using a handheld device to gently exfoliate the surface of your skin, microdermabrasion eliminates dead skin cells and excess oil. This helps shrink your pores and reduce acne scars and hyperpigmentation to enhance your overall appearance.

Carbon Laser Peel

This minimally invasive skin resurfacing process helps to clear your clogged pores and shrink your sebaceous glands, resulting in reduced oil production. Liquid carbon that permeates your pores is applied to your skin, and since laser light is attracted to carbon particles, the light waves destroy the carbon as it passes by and remove dead skin cells, sebum, and other contaminants.

Blue Light Therapy

Blue light therapy targets the acne-causing bacteria on the surface of your skin to decrease inflammation and prevent breakouts. This non-invasive treatment may be helpful for those with oily, acne-prone skin.

Pico Laser

Having large pores is a common problem for those with oily skin, and this issue is worsened by the accumulation of sebum and dead skin cells within them. But fret not, because pico laser treatment can fix that. Featuring ultra-short laser pulses, this non-invasive therapy tackles skin imperfections precisely without harming the surrounding tissue. Pico laser energy encourages the production of collagen and is effective in shrinking enlarged pores, leading to a more even and polished skin texture.

Ethosome Gold PTT (Photothermal Therapy)

Ethosome Gold PTT integrates gold microparticles with photothermal technology. After the application of gold microparticles to the skin to target oil glands, they are activated with a particular wavelength of light. Although controlled, precise heat is targeted at your sebaceous glands to decrease the overproduction of sebum and reduce skin oiliness, this will cause no damage to the surrounding skin tissue.

Extraction

By manually extracting comedones, the buildup of sebum and debris in your clogged pores can be eliminated, reducing the probability of an acne breakout and improving the appearance of your oily skin.

Medication

There are various topical and oral medications on the market that will help to enhance the appearance of your oily skin. They can help to penetrate sebum and clear your pores or regulate sebum production in your skin. However, it is best to consult with a doctor before using any medication.

Oily Skin Treatment FAQs

What is the best treatment for oily skin?

Everyone has a different skin condition, and the best treatment for each person will depend on their needs and goals. Your doctor will be able to recommend the most suitable oily skin treatment for you after a consultation.

Yes, you can still wear makeup even if you have oily skin. However, you should choose the right makeup to not aggravate or highlight your condition. Opt for makeup that is oil-free, water-based, matte, long-wearing, or non-comedogenic, as these can help to control the shine on your face and reduce the appearance of your pores.

Having blotting paper around is also helpful to quickly absorb the excess oil on your face. Finally, you must remember to remove your makeup at the end of the day. Do not sleep in your makeup, as it may cause a breakout and lead to an increased production of sebum.
